The parables of the ten virgins told by our Lord Jesus Christ is one of my favorites parables in the Holy Bible.
With this parable, Jesus foretold how his second coming would be. He explained how the exact hour of his coming is not known to any man, and why we must all continue in anticipation while also being fully prepared for His arrival.
Jesus often taught with parables, using real-life situations to teach the truth of the kingdom of heaven to the people. And Jesus likened Christians to the ten virgins.
With the parables of the ten virgins, Jesus made us understand that even as Christians, there’s a level of preparations you need to make in order to enter into the kingdom of God.
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom (2) And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Mattew 25:1,2;
The ten virgins had been invited to the wedding by the bridegroom, just as Christ as invited all Christians to the kingdom of God. But, only five of those virgins were wise to have brought an extra oil and only those five entered with the bridegroom.
All Christians are qualified to enter into the kingdom of God, but only those with the extra oil will truly enter.
In this post, the Holy Spirit is going to show you how to live as the wise virgins and not as the foolish ones.
Christians, as the wise virgins
Christians who live as the wise virgins are always ready and prepared for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. They live with the understanding that going to church is not the only thing required to enter into the kingdom of God but living a life according to His will, adding also the seven attributes of faith, which is the extra oil, to delight God.
Christians, as the foolish virgins
These type of Christians often live a life of righteousness only when they’re pleased or when they believe the end might be near for them.
The easiest way to know Christians living as the foolish virgins is to, break the sad news that they’re dying at a set date and watch how righteous they can become, now tell them it was a false report and watch how quickly they can return to their old life.
We’ve established that there are wise virgins and foolish virgins in the Christendom. And we’ve also identified some attributes of Christians that live as the wise virgins as well as those that live as the foolish virgins.
Now we need to unravel the mystery of the lamp.
What exactly is the lamp, and why is it important to keep it burning?
But if one gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. (4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them. 2 Corinthians 4:3,4;
Before the day we accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, our life was without the lamp, and we lived in darkness and because of this, our soul belonged in hell. Our soul belonged to the devil because there was no light in us, and the devil ruled in the darkness of our soul.
The devil had total control of our life then, and it pleased him to be in charge.
But since the day we found Christ, the Holy Spirit has come upon us and lived within us as a lamp given light to all the corners of our soul. And the devil could no longer find a dark place to hide so he fled.
The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord searching all the inward parts of the belly. Proverb 20:27;
The Spirit of God lives in all Christian believers and it searches within us. The light searches within us to ensure that there’s no darkness in any part of our soul to hide the devil.
For thou will light my candle, the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. Psalm 18:28;
The Lord God enlighten our darkness the day we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior by giving us the Holy Spirit as a lamp to our soul, however, it is left to us to keep that lamp filled with oil so it keeps burning.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men (5) And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:4,5;
Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right Spirit within me. (12) Restore unto me the Joy of thy salvation and uphold me with thy free spirit. Psalm 18:28;
From the scriptures taken above, we can relate to three facts:
- The Holy Spirit is the light of men that shines in the darkness of our soul as a lamp.
- The lamp, which is the Holy Spirit, should also be renewed.
- We need to keep the lamp, which is the Holy Spirit burning by adding more oils, just as the five wise virgins did.
However, there’s still one thing missing, and that is: what exactly is the Oil?
The Oil of Righteousness
The oil required to keep our lamp burning is righteousness. But one thing we should keep in mind, it’s not a choice but an obligation for all Christian believers to keep their light burning. Let your loins be girded about, and your light burning. Luke 12:35;
This obligation of filling your lamp with the oil of righteousness can be fulfilled by living your life according to God’s will and commandments.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness. Ephesians 6:14;
The truth as described in the scripture quoted above is Christ Jesus, He is the truth. In Him alone, lies all truth. Therefore, we are required to live with Christ in righteousness.
Anyone who doesn’t have Christ Jesus has no lamp -Holy Spirit-; And anyone who has Christ but fails to live in righteousness, has the lamp but the lamp is without oil and as thereby burned out.
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity, therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Heb 1:9;
Having the oil of righteousness is enough to keep your lamp burning for some time, but having the extra oil of righteousness, will keep your lamp burning until the coming of our Lord Jesus.
The extra Oil of Righteousness
Don’t keep enough oil -righteousness-, to keep you through till the time you believe the Messiah will come, but keep even extra oil of righteousness to last you through eternity.
Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually. Leviticus 24:2;
You need to keep your light burning with extra oil of righteousness. God desires His children to have that extra oil of righteousness. But what is that extra oil?
The extra oil of righteousness is getting yourself deepened into God’s righteousness.
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (6) And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; (7) And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (8) For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 2 Peter 1:5-9;
Having the oil of righteousness is having faith in God, but having the extra oil of righteousness is adding to your faith the seven things as described in the scripture above.
Explaining the extra Oil of Righteousness
Virtue: Behaviour showing high moral standards.
Christians who have the oil of righteousness will have faith, but those who have the extra oil of righteousness will add virtue to their faith.
The devil can kill the faith of a righteous man with enough temptations, but it’s impossible for him to kill the faith of a righteous man that adds virtue to his faith because he has the extra oil of righteousness to keep his lamp burning even in the face of temptations.
Knowledge: Adding also to the virtue which has been added to your faith, is knowledge. And trust me, this knowledge is not the kind of knowledge you get by getting all the degrees on earth, this knowledge can only be gained with the fear of God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7;
The bible also made us understand that anybody who doesn’t have the fear of God, is a fool.
Temperance: Adding to your knowledge is temperance. Temperance means moderation in, action, thought or feeling: restraint. Let your moderation be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Philippians 4:5;
If you’re a true Christian believer waiting for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, then you have no moral justification to fight with or keep malice with anyone; except of course you lack that extra oil of righteousness which is temperance (restraint).
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee. (24) Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, First be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Mattew 5:23,24;
Patience: Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious. As a Christians, you should be able to face all temptations and trials without been annoyed or anxious as to when you’ll be saved. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience. Romans 5:3;
Patience is the key to overcoming all tribulations. Also, it’s a sign of being a true disciple of Christ Jesus. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience. 2 Corinthians 12:12;
If patience has its place in your life, then you have one of the important attributes that keep you worthy and ready for the second coming of Christ Jesus. James 1:3,4; Hebrew 6:12;
Godliness: A child of a lion will have lion attributes, likewise we the children of God must have the God kind of attributes. I have said ye are god’s, and all of you are the children of the most High. Psalm 82:6;
So, what then are the attributes of God?
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you. (45) That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven, for He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Mattew 5:44,45;
Sadly, not many Christian believers are living up to God expectations, because they do not have the extra oil of righteousness.
Honestly, when was the last time you blessed the people that cursed you or pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you?
He that says he is in the light, and hated his brother, is in darkness even until now. 1 John 2:9;
Believe me sincerely, it doesn’t matter who you are, pastor, bishop, choristers, or just a regular churchgoer, until you begin to live your life having the extra oil of righteousness, you’re making it extremely for the devil to steal away your faith and righteousness, and this can be very dangerous for you.
Brotherly Kindness: And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as noonday. Isiah 58:10;
As a Christian believer, how many times have you considered the hungry in your own world? Your world can be your country, church, street, family; etc. And even as a church, how many times have you supported the hungry in the church? How many times have you given them hope by feeding them?
All these things as small and insignificant they may seem to many Christians, they will be used as the base of judgment on the last day.
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: (32) And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: (33) And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. (34) Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: (35) For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: (36) Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. (37) Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? (38) When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? (39) Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? (40) And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mattew 25:31-40;
You can be a Christian, but for you to be welcomed into the kingdom of God you need the extra oil of brotherly kindness.
Charity: This means simply: to love and to care. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. John15:12;
Some Christians operate in love but their love is partial. They only love those who love them and those who are in the position to be loved by them. But charity means to give freely even to people who may be undeserving of what we give.
The death of Christ and His resurrection was an act of charity. He loved and cared for us, that’s why He gave his life to save us. Have you ever tried to imagine the kind of power and enjoyment Jesus would have had in heaven as the son of God? And to have left all that behind and died for us sinners in this sinful world. This was the greatest act of charity.
Jesus expects us to do likewise. To love and to care for others irrespective of their social class and standards. That’s another extra oil of righteousness. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2;
The ten virgins all had the oil of righteousness, as all true Christian believers have the lamp of the Holy Spirit through their belief in Christ, this in itself is righteousness. But to keep that lamp burning until the second coming of Jesus Christ you need to have the seven extra oil of righteousness. This is the only way to guarantee your entrance into the kingdom of God.
Believing in God is righteousness, but that is not enough to enter into His kingdom. You need to deepen yourself in the righteousness of God. By adding to your faith the seven extra righteousness as found in the scripture quoted earlier in this post. 2 Peter 1:5-9;
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good reports, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8;
